San Diego Superior Court is seeking qualified applicants for an upcoming vacancy for the executive
management position of Director, Legal Services.
JOB SUMMARY
Under administrative direction of the Court’s Executive Officer, the position of Director, Legal Services
provides direction and oversight with regard to all legal issues affecting the court, providing guidance
and support to judicial officers and management; serves as counsel to the Presiding Judge and the
Executive Officer; and performs related duties as required.
This single position executive management class is responsible for legal services provided throughout the
court, both adjudicative and administrative.

The IDEAL CANDIDATE should have the following:
KNOWLEDGE OF:
Principles and practices of management and supervision applicable to developing and overseeing
an internal professional practice; management practices and techniques including budgeting,
organizational planning and analysis, personnel, project planning and supervision; program
management practices and techniques; research methods and techniques; federal and state
statutes and regulations impacting court operation, including those related to employment and
contract law; scope, role, and application of local court rules and procedures; conduct of
proceedings in trial, appellate and federal courts as well as administrative settings; judicial ethics;
case management, processing and calendaring practices within the local judicial system.
ABILITY TO:
Select, supervise, train and review the work of others; develop organizational expectations;
monitor and support the work of professional staff; coordinate with other management staff to
obtain needed resources and improve services and work processes; evaluate program procedures
and effectiveness; organize and manage program operations and implement program revisions;
identify and analyze legal issues and the applicable statutes and case law; prepare and present
legal analyses, alternatives, and recommendations orally and in writing for judicial and
administrative action; ensure court compliance with legal and regulatory requirements; write or
review opinions regarding the duties, powers and obligations of the Court; conduct and oversee
litigation activities; review and oversee contract drafting and implementation; plan, confer with
and advise judicial officers, attorneys, court staff, and the public on procedural and substantive
legal issues; handle sensitive matters with finesse, discretion, and sound judgment; recognize and
respect limit of authority and responsibility; uphold judicial ethics; work in a high volume
environment with conflicting priorities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Current active membership in good standing with the State Bar of California;ANDGraduation from an accredited college or university with a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree;
AND
Five (5) years of full-time, increasingly responsible, professional legal experience as a practicing attorney
involving litigation, or legal research in support of the judiciary; two (2) years must have included
supervisory and administrative experience.
Experience in working with the courts, employment law, litigation, and transactional law highly desirable.
Substitution:
Current active membership in good standing with the State Bar of California may substitute for the JD
degree.
