Meet this month’s presenters:
Michael Ubaldini is a legal technology business development professional with over 20 years of experience. He is known for his sales acumen and leadership prowess, his knack for nurturing relationships, and his passionate presence in legal community associations and events.
Mike’s technology journey began over twenty years ago selling Microsoft-certified training. Over time, he found his way to a new organization where he entered the arena of enterprise software sales, helping grow their revenue five times in four years. This experience reinforced his passion and strengths for technology sales while sharpening his learned and natural skillsets. Mike discovered that not only did he love surrounding himself with brilliant people, but that he’d also devote himself to helping clients achieve their vision and build a strong customer-oriented reputation. He discovered his true niche where these converged: at the center of legal technology, where he’s found his calling for the past 18+ years.
Mike has spent the past several happy years with Strategic Technology Solutions, a premiere provider of technology business services and solutions focusing exclusively on the legal industry. His sales expertise ranges from offerings like managed IT and cloud services to complex system migrations, upgrades, and other comprehensive technology projects. His favorite part of working with the legal community is their firm, fair, and caring culture.
After hours, you may find Mike running across the Arizona deserts or enjoying the delightful food of his Italian heritage. Mike is a lifelong learner who enjoys trying new things and thinking creatively. He finds fulfillment spending time in his hometown of Phoenix, taking trips to San Diego, traversing the mountains of Colorado, and visiting friends and family in his home state of Pennsylvania (and yes, he is a devoted Phillies and Eagles fan). He is grateful for adventures and family time with his wife, his two beautiful daughters, and their family’s beloved dog.
Mike has volunteered with Big Brothers Big Sisters and the Phoenix Area Parks & Recreation Park Steward Program. He served as a Co-Founder and Board of Directors member for the nonprofit organization NixCancer Foundation.
Derek Barto
Derek provides valuable guidance to law firms seeking to improve their financial performance and achieve long-term success. His background and expertise in finance and accounting complement his deep understanding of the strategic landscape within the legal industry, in which he has consulted for most of his career. This unique experience makes him an integral addition to the leadership team of any law firm.
As a CPA and the principal consultant of Barto Consulting LLP, Derek uses his expertise to provide advice to his clients in helping to solve some of the more pressing problems they face. He advises law firms on finance and accounting matters such as helping to obtain timely and accurate management information, collaborating with managing partners to oversee the finance and accounting functions, and reducing risk and waste by improving systems and processes that may produce unreliable information or lead to compliance issues such as trust account violations. Additionally, He helps to design, implement, maintain and administer compensation structures for partners of law firms and provides insight in other areas critical to any law firm’s financial strategy.
Prior to founding Barto Consulting LLP, Derek was a partner in Armanino, LLP’s Law Firm Services Group where he developed and led the Law Firm outsourced finance and accounting services department, orchestrating and implementing solutions to help clients improve their finance function. In his capacity at Armanino and predecessor firm RBZ, LLP, he held leadership roles in all aspects of the of the Group’s tax, accounting and consulting functions. As a consultant he provided advice to law firms on critical strategic matters including advising on partner compensation methodologies, mergers and acquisitions, law firm startups, finance and reporting restructuring, accounting department process improvement, profitability improvement, and analysis and benchmarking studies. His clients ranged from startup law firms with less than 10 attorneys to multi-office firms with over 200 attorneys operating in multiple states.
Derek has bachelor’s and master’s degrees in accountancy from Wake Forest University and a master’s degree in law firm management from George Washington University.
